Charcoal properties of Malaysian bamboo charcoal carbonized at 750 °C

The carbonization of five Malaysian bamboo species, namely Bambusa vulgaris, Dendrocalamus asper, Gigantochloa hasskarliana, levis, and Schizostachyum brachycladum, was conducted to investigate the charcoal properties compare quality produced based on proximate analysis. Carbonization at 750 °C using a modified Iwasaki steel drum kiln successful for all species. Bamboo morphological features varied basic density increased with culm height. A yield more than 30% recorded in species except B. vulgaris D. asper. Charcoals made from asper G. hasskarliana could serve as alternative raw material production industries due their low moisture, volatile matter, ash, high fixed carbon content. All had mean gross calorific value between 24.4 29.2 MJ/kg. Among different sections, bottom section best charcoal. acceptable domestic use.
